Day 7: Hazleton, PA to Danville, PA

Distance: 37.5 mi, Climbed: 1,677 ft
Completed: 249.3 mi, 13.339 ft

I really enjoyed getting back on the open road today. Rail-trail riding has many advantages – no cars, closer to nature, and often minimal hills. But I still prefer a quiet country road – the sense of adventure, the beautiful farms, small towns, and even the hills.

Joanna and I rode most of the day aside the Susquehanna River with great views along the way. About halfway, we stopped at Old Mill Hoagie and shared a meatball wedge. Daphne was very nice and pointed us to a hidden picnic table out back along the creek. Honestly, I didn’t want to leave. It was so peaceful back there. Not bad for a quick bite on the road.

We did have a little excitement during the ride. I was riding in front with Joanna behind me when two deer suddenly burst from the trees and sprinted across the road about thirty feet in front of me. I wisely slowed down, and a moment later, two more deer bolted across the road. It was both startling and amazing to see them move that fast right in front of us.

I have been thinking about raising my handlebars a bit to get a little more relaxed riding position. We rode into Danville just about 5:00 PM, and Joanna noticed that the local bike store was still open. Colby was happy to help. He was very excited to hear we were biking across the country. He even took a picture of us in front of the store for his Instagram account. We are Insta-famous!

Danville has many very well-preserved homes and buildings dating back to the late 1800s. We’re staying at The Doctor’s Inn, which was built in the 1880s and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

A day that started with open roads and ended in a place full of history—hard to ask for more. Grateful for days like this.
